Short answer: 1/4" cast acrylic is the best all around thickness for UV printing. Use 1/8" for magnets, tags and wall pieces where weight and shipping cost matter, and 1/2" or 1" when the piece needs to stand up on its own, like photo blocks and awards.
We cut acrylic blanks for UV printer owners every day in our Michigan shop, and thickness is the question we get most. Here is how each one behaves on a UV printer and what it is best for.
1/8 inch (about 3 mm)
Light, cheap to ship, and easy to stack in bulk. It is the thickness most bulk blank packs use. The tradeoff is feel: it reads thin in the hand, and large pieces can flex. Keep 1/8" pieces under about 6" for anything that will be handled.
Best for: fridge magnets, gift tags, wall tiles, small signs, layered pieces.

1/4 inch (about 6 mm)
The all rounder. It stays flat on a vacuum or magnetic bed, holds a clean laser cut edge, and feels like a finished product. Most makers who try both 1/8" and 1/4" end up standardizing on 1/4" for anything they sell as a gift.
Best for: coasters, plaques, door signs, photo prints, awards on a stand.

1/2 inch (about 12 mm)
Thick enough to stand on its own edge without a stand. Printed photos look like they float inside the block, especially if you print reversed on the back face. Check your printer's maximum object height before you buy; most desktop UV printers handle 1/2" with room to spare.
Best for: freestanding photo blocks, desk plaques, name blocks, product display bases.
Shop: 1/2" square blanks · 1/2" photo blocks
1 inch (about 25 mm)
The premium look. A 1" block is heavy, glassy and catches light on every edge, which is why it is the standard for awards and high end photo gifts. It costs more per piece and needs more clearance under the print head, so confirm your printer's height limit first.
Best for: awards, premium photo blocks, memorial pieces, display pedestals.

Cast, not extruded, at every thickness
Whatever thickness you choose, buy cast acrylic. Cast sheet laser cuts with a polished edge instead of melting, resists the stress cracking you can get from solvent cleaners, and takes UV ink without the surface haze common on cheap extruded sheet. Every blank we sell is cast.
